Biography
Russ and Wendy Kwan are fine art photographers currently working in traditional black and white processes from their home and studio in Vancouver Canada. They have been photographing for a combined 75 years, working in film, digital and hybrid media.
Since going full-time in 2004 Russ and Wendy's work has been exhibited in solo commercial and academic venues in Canada and the United States, has been published in feature articles for CameraArts and PhotoEd magazines, and has received several international awards. Their self published, award winning book, "Chasing Light Stranger", is catalogued in the reference library of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, an affiliate gallery of the National Gallery of Canada. Their work is held in public and private collections in Canada, the US, Mexico, Great Britain, Australia and Asia.
In 2009 Russ and Wendy started their own small group Fine Art Photography Courses, which focus on assisting students to develop their own vision for their personal photographic work. Russ and Wendy are continually inspired by the dedication of their students and enjoy seeing the way each one progresses, as they create work that expresses their unique voice.
Workshop(s)
Expressive Photography and the Creative Form
2 hour presentation
Russ and Wendy Kwan look forward to working with you in an interactive workshop that explores the role of form and space to create expressive personal photographs. Rooted in the presentation style of our small group Fine Art Photography Courses, we offer "Expressive Photography and the Creative Form" for the first time at the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club Seminar. Our goal is to inspire you to explore, through constructs available to digital and film photographers, paths to greater expression in your personal work.
We will combine lecture with hands on exercises and discussion to closely examine the significant roles that basic forms play in strongly constructed photographs. We will also explore the relationships that can be configured between form, space, and tone with respect to photographic weight and balance. You will have the opportunity to play with form as a device to enhance expression in your personal work. Our exercises are designed to challenge and provoke questions and discussion.
The presentation will be wrapped up with some of our own personal ideas and strategies, a feature we include at the end of each term of our courses. We hope these thoughts, based on content from the presentation, will help carry you forward as you evolve your personal photography.
We will also have on hand samples of our traditional black and white silver gelatin prints and our book Chasing Light Stranger for you to review at the break.
You do not need to bring a camera, just your spirit of adventure!
