Workshop(s)

Understanding your digital camera: Basic

In this session I will present a clear understanding of the most critical processes and settings that need to be understood to successfully exploit the powerful array of features that modern digital compact cameras possess.  This session will include explanation and discussion on the following topics:
The nature, and importance, of two vital aspects of a digital photograph – the number of pixels  and the number of colours. Both of these are controlled by the camera operator, and have a critical effect on the ultimate quality of the recorded images.
Which menu settings and items can be fixed once and then left along. The discussion will include recommendations on what values each of these should be set to (examples: digital zoom, red-eye reduction)
Discussion on a collection of important settings that cannot be simply left at a fixed value, but need to be adjusted dependent on the type of photography, the environmental conditions, the light, the distance, and all of the other variables that complicate the simple act of taking a photo.
Important issues relating to the management of photos, the act of transferring from camera to computer, and basic principles of photo management and handling.
Discussion on the various camera accessories such as batteries, memory cards, memory card readers, tripods, LCD shades. Best management techniques for extending the life and health of the rechargeable batteries, and the memory cards.

Understanding your SLR camera – Advanced

In this advanced session we will look at how to optimize use of advanced digital SLR cameras, and will discuss the merits / demerits of many new features such as Live View, Video capture, Editing features which are becoming more commonplace in todays SLR cameras. I will take a different approach, and the approach will be structured around how to take photographs through a method of evaluating the hurdles and obstacles, and then selecting the settings that are appropriate to the overcoming of the evaluated obstacles. In this approach, we will work through the following topics:
Description of the most common hurdles we face when we shoot in the many and varied environments around us:  low light, distance factors (very far, very close up), rapid movement, poor lighting colour amongst others
Description of the 6 most critical features / settings in the SLR camera that help us overcome these hurdles: Image size / quality; Mode dial position; ISO; White balance; Metering modes; Exposure Compensation.
Review of some of the more recent and more advanced settings, and their usefulness: these include Live View, Video capture modes, Editing menus
The presentation of a simple Recipe-based approach to taking pictures anywhere at any time. This strategy will definitely be of immense help to SLR owners in helping to reduce all of the complexities associated with the act of capturing life, family, nature, and all of the other wonderful photographic scenarios available to photographers.
