Biography
Mary L. G. Jensen is a Master of Photographic Arts (MPA) as designated by the Professional Photographers of Canada, and a Fellow of the Professional Photographers Association of British Columbia. She is an accredited portrait and wedding photographer who now specialises in family and child portraiture.Mary has been instructing both fellow professionals and photo-enthusiasts since the early 80s—both in photography and in retouching (back when it was done by hand!) She has taught at almost every major photography institution in BC, including presenting a program on hand-colouring at APAC in the 90’s.
She is grateful she started her career of making fine portraits early enough that she had a chance to master her craft before needing to learn the details of the ever-changing digital world.
None of this says how enthusiastic and fun Mary still finds all aspects of photography. She finds it’s a subject that continues to fascinate, and the pursuit of image perfection keeps her reaching to outdo herself each time she picks up a camera.

Easy Steps to Add Impact to Portraits with Retouching
One of the great compositional principles is that the eye goes to the area of greatest contrast in an image. By making the subject the area of greatest contrast, we can add immense impact to our images. Additionally we can reduce contrast where it’s distracting so the viewers’ eye goes right to the subject. All this can be achieved with simple, broad strokes in Adobe’s Photoshop® or Elements®. Mary will be demonstrating with portraits, but the techniques can be used in any image to add impact.

Refine your Portraits with Classic Posing Techniques
Classic posing techniques of the 40’s and 50’s are useful to know so that you can flatter your subject. The poses were all designed to make people look better and to correct less than ideal attributes. Besides learning the basic ‘rules’, we will also see how to modernise or ‘loosen up’ the poses so that your subjects look relaxed and natural. We will address poses for both men and women with easy modifications for children.
